The remnants of Hurricane Hilary, the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years, are moving further north and are expected to impact western Canada this week.
CTV Your Morning’s Chief Meteorologist Kelsey McEwen stated that the storm will move northward, bringing heavy rainfall to southern Alberta, as well as some areas of Saskatchewan and even into central Manitoba.
The center of Saskatchewan is expected to experience rainfall in scattered areas until Thursday, August 24. Southeastern regions of British Columbia will also see showers from the beginning of the week until Wednesday, August 23. Northern areas like Quesnel and Williams Lake are at risk of thunderstorms starting from Tuesday afternoon.
Hurricane Hilary initially made landfall on the arid Baja California peninsula on August 20. The National Hurricane Center in Miami downgraded Hurricane Hilary a day later, but still issued “life-threatening flood” warnings for regions of the United States.
Rainfall warnings in Canada come at a time when air quality is deteriorating significantly due to widespread forest fires in the western region.
As of 3:20 PM E.T. on Monday, August 21, Canada’s air quality ranks third worst in the world in terms of pollution levels.
